|Authors:||Miss Jiraporn Praimanee|
|Abstract:||The objectives of this research were to 1) classify wordings (words, key words, phrases, and sentences) which encouraged the learners to perform their desirable characteristics found in the primary education level mathematics textbooks produced by The Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology as well as by private publishers. 2) investigate the categories of the learners’ desirable characteristics included in math word problems. 3) find out the number of math word problems in which the learners’ desirable characteristics were inserted , classified by levels and strand ,by mean of documentary research. The research populations were primary education level mathematics textbooks licensed by the Ministry of Education (according to the notice about making judicious choices of learning media in schools), in accordance with the basic education curriculum B.E.2544 and the basic education core curriculum B.E.2551. The top three publishers of which the math textbooks were chosen in most schools were purposive sampling. Eighteen math textbooks of three publishers were selected. Those were produced by The Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology, Aksorn Charoen Tat Co.,Ltd., and by The Institute of Academic Development. Data collection instruments were “ Analysis of the congruency between words, key words, phrases, and sentences indicating specific characteristics and each desirable characteristic ”, and “ Analysis of the congruency between word problems and desirable characteristics.” The content validity was evaluated by using the index of item-objective congruence which the range of index score was 0.5 to 1.0 ,and the reliability score was not lower than 95%.Research findings revealed that 1) 41 wordings (words, key words, phrases and sentences) encouraging the learners to perform their desirable characteristics were found. 2) only seven desirable characteristics were inserted in word problems. The seven characteristics “ Love of nation, religion and king”, “ Self-discipline”, “Avidity for learning”, “Observance of principles of Sufficiency Economy Philosophy in one’s way of life”, “Dedication and commitment to work”, “Cherishing Thai-ness”, and “Public-mindedness” were approximately found in every textbook. The overall outcome was about 13 – 14%. On the other hand, “Honest and integrity" was never evaluated. 3) In The Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology textbooks, “Observance of principles of Sufficiency Economy Philosophy in one’s way of life”, was most inserted, whereas “Cherishing Thai-ness” was least. Those characteristics were distributed in every level textbook, especially most found in Grade 6 but least found in Grade 1. Classified by strand, “Numbers and Operations” most included the desirable characteristics in, while “Geometry” least included. In Aksorn Charoen Tat Co.,Ltd. textbooks “Public-mindedness” was most found; on the other hand, “ Love of nation, religion and king” was least found. The seven characteristics were most distributed in Grade 6, and least in Grade 3.The strand inserting learners’ desirable characteristics most was “Numbers and Operations” ,whereas no insertion in “Data Analysis and Probability” . In The Institute of Academic Development textbooks, “Public-mindedness” was most included, and “Cherishing Thai-ness” was least. The characteristics were most distributed in Grade 4 but least in Grade 5. The strand inserting the characteristics most was “Numbers and Operations”, while no insertion in “Geometry”.|
